Nepal is a small country, situated
between India and China (Tibet). The country area is about
a third of California, with a population of about 22 million
people. The majority of the people are Hindus, but there are
also plenty of Buddhists.
Although it's a small country, constituting
mostly of mountains and hills, the climate varies considerably
depending on where you are. In the southern parts are Terai,
where the climate is tropical and jungle like, while the Tibetan
border is constantly covered with snow. In Nepal, you will
also find some of the world's highest mountain peaks: Kanchanjunga,
Lhotse, Annapurna, and, of course, Mount Everest. Nepal
Treks is something that one cannot afford to miss.
Nepal's beautiful nature is drastically
contrasted by the social conditions. Nepal is one of the 25
least developed countries in the world. About 40% of the population
suffers from malnutrition, a problem caused mostly by the
limited access to unpolluted water. Nepal's largest industry
is agriculture, where more than 90% of the populations are
farmers. Most other businesses produce carpets or clothing.
Nepalese export consists mostly of non-refined goods (raw
material), while they import technology, medicine, fuel, and
other industrial goods. This produces considerably larger
expenses than revenues for the country.
Just like in most poor countries, the
illiteracy rate is very high, about 60%. It's possible to
take eleven years of education, of which five are mandatory
and free of charge. Despite this, less than 75% completes
the first five years.
The dependency on foreign financial
support and tourism have caused great problems in Nepal the
last years. Because of political disputes between the royal
family and the Maoist rebels, Nepal has suffered from considerably
reduced tourism and many countries have seized providing financial
aid.
